Athletes or Bullies?

I think it’s fine that there’s a lot of high-spirited talk that goes on among rivals.  However, when a head coach starts trash talking another head coach or players on another team, what kind role model is he being?
When Rex Ryan and Jets players speak badly about the New England Patriots, it sends the wrong message to all fans.  While this might be seen as Coach Ryan’s attempt to rally his team to a fabulous win over the Patriots, it can also give young, impressionable children who play sports the idea that it’s okay to bully the opponent rather than play hard with dignity.
There have been too many football players over the years who have been taken off the field in stretchers because of personal fouls or unsportsmanlike conduct.  I like nothing more than a hard-fought, thrilling football game, and again, I’m hoping that #92 sacks Big Ben five times on Sunday.  But let’s do a better job teaching our kids to play hard and to play fair.
